This trip will take you through the magnificent chains of Gheralta Mountains, home to several tens of old-aged rock-churches decorated with meaningful religious paintings and scattered throughout the breathtaking mountain cliffs. Trekking to these mountains and churches will test both your religious and physical strength. It’s designed to make your weekends extraordinary.
This weekend tour lasts two days and one night. It starts from Meqele. People coming from Addis Ababa or other places can join after an early morning flight. A direct drive to wuqro, a short visit to Abraha We Atsbeha and a tough hike to Mariam Qorqor and Daniel Qorqor completes the first day. A beautiful sunset, camping night at the mountain side, a fresh food cooked live and an entertaining music will accompany you to your sleep. Awaken by a sunrise bath and a breakfast with fresh tea/coffee, you will be taken to hike Abune Yemaeta, the most inaccessible church in the world. After having a lunch at some of Hawzen’s restaurants a drive back to Mekelle through Negash paying a visit to the 2nd holiest Muslim place on earth (Al Nejashi Mosque) completes the tour late evening of the second day.
The tour is designed for 5 – 10 group of people, but can be arranged for solo travelers given solo travels are a bit expensive.
The program runs every weekend or for on weekdays on request and can be easily extended, for those who have time and interest, upto 4, 5 and/or 10 days to explore the most of the mysterious mountains, the rock-church of Mariam Wukro at Nebelet to as far as the monastery of Abune Yohanni of Tembien, Axum, Yeha and the monastery of Debre Damo, agreed by most as the first monastery in Ethiopia rich in old-aged, valuable manuscripts. It can also be extended to include Erta Ale and Dallo Depression, the second most active volcano and the lowest point in the world respectively.
